it has been  a long time since my last post.I have been making additions to my art skills  like kundan rangoli making,beads Jewellery making silk tread jhumkas and recipes .However,I have not been  able to post regularly...

here comes  one more post to my Jewellery making craft.yes this is very much in trend now!silk thread Jewellery !

I have  made only jhumkas.yet to make necklaces and bangles.I must say this definitely needs lot of patience but after loking at the finished  product  definitely  feels it's  a very relaxing,creative  art!Its worth time and patience.

How to stitch a letter holder / D I Y letter holder

Make your own letter holder

In my previous posts about the letter holders, I have just shown the letter holders I made patching the left over scraps.

In this post I am going to show, how to stitch the wall hanging letter holder all by yourselves.

You can call it a Do It Yourself project.(DIY letter holder)

materials required are..

1. canvas
2. cloth double the size of the canvas....(this is going to be back portion)
3. patch worked pieces, 2 numbers
4. cloth to cover the 2 patch worked pieces
5. lace or binding
6. thread to stitch

method:

1. Attach  the canvas to the cloth you have chosen to form the back portion of the letter holder.
2.   
3.  Attach cloth to the 2 patch worked pieces. joined along the red dotted line.
4. 
5. keep the bottom part of the front piece or to say the 1st patch worked piece on the bottom part of the back piece ,pin it and place a mark...as pointed by the index finger.
6.  
7. take the 2nd patched piece ,place it 1 inch below the marked line and flip it down towards the 1st piece.
8. 
9. stitch it .Flip it back . put a turning seam after flipping.
10. 
11. stitch along the long sides of the front and back pieces put together.
12. 
13. fold it into half ,cut 3- 4 inches above the top patched piece to get any shape u desire.straight,domed etc.
14. 
15. using the lace or binding stitch along the edges.
16. 
17. attach a ring or lace to hang it on to the wall.
18. 
19. The ready letter holder looks like this

Letter holder

 Inspired from the traditional patchwork quilts from karnataka called ... kavadi or kavudi..

As mentioned in my previous post about the letter holder(,letter holder)  I was very much inspired by the kavadi lying in the sun to dry... I picked the needle ... scraps.. thick one strand thread and did two small pieces of patch work by hand. While working on these patches what I found out was, this method of patch work is extremely flexible as we can use any size of scraps to make a big  quilt!

Here is the picture of the hand sewn patch work piece.

While working on the pieces itself I had already decided to make a  letter holder out of these. The hand stitched patch work has its own beauty .The colourful thread used in the kantha work( running stitch) to hold the patches together makes it very attractive. Without  delaying  further today I finished putting the quilted pieces together to convert into this beautiful letter holder  to adorn my home.

I liked the hand patched more than the machine patched where as my daughter liked the latter!

Inspired from traditional patch work of Karnataka .. called kavadi or kavudi

I was very much inspired by the patchwork quilt , which  a construction worker had put to dry in the sun. The quilts are called kavadi in kannada and godhadi in marathi languages respectively.

Immediately I went to her, her name is Chandrakantamma. She is from Gulbarga district. I will write about her and her work in the coming posts.On asking about how she did the patch work quilt she readily gave me the details... and needless to say, my hands were itching to pick the needle to do a miniature patch work stuff!or so called kavadi..

With no delay. I did 2 small pieces and took to her to show  the next day.

To work manually is time consuming.. and also very laborious... I came up with a new idea. I decided to do patch work on  machine  using the same method of patch work second time. Although there is a huge difference in the out come!
 Out of the two patch work pieces I did.. the hand patched and the machine patched... I decided to stitch a letter holder using the machine stitched pieces, which looks so perfect for the typical Indian home.

I did this thermocol name board for my nephew Shrihari's thread ceremony.. in the month of may this year. The tough part was to cut   the alphabets neatly... which I guess I did fairly well.The coloring part was easy.. I first coloured the board and alphabets separately and attached the alphabets to the board... applied some glitter while the paint was still wet. The glitter is not visible in the picture  though.. !One more art piece to my blogspot :)

Small purse or pencil pouch

I was just thinking of utilising small bits of fabric n other left out scraps n then came up with the idea of making pencil pouches n cosmetic bags and a few  hand purses .here is one such purse which is my daughter Prachi's favorite !

a smocking frock

When I was small girl I remember my mother used to stitch me frocks with all the embroidery that she had learnt, so smocking frock was one among those., I remember having an umbrella frock,which was my favorite as it would swirl as I spinned.
I had always thought of stitching an umbrella frock n a smocking frock for my elder daughter . umbrella frock I stitched was sleeve less, black n white color and  s he used it almost 3 years . very recently, that is just before DIWALI I thought of stitching smocking frock ,as I found a nice satin material lying.so here  is my addition to the art part of my blog and,

mehandi for diwali

I love mehndi tattoos.My daughter also loves as much as I do, Here are the pictures of the mehandi tattoo done by a ready made mehandi cone.

1)mehandi on my 2 years old daughter's palm.I wish I would have done nice around the mango design and on the fingers also but she is too little to sit still for long time and I had to finish it fast and dry it quickly with a blow dryer(hair dryer) . she hardly kept for 2 hours but still that was sufficient to get nice dark orange colour which lasted for 3 days.

2) my mehandi tattoo Arabic style.

Knitting

when I was in school and college I was more interested in doing embroidery and stitching. I did join knitting class in 1992 summer.I did a pair of socks and a baby sweater in brick pattern in black and orange color, which I have not finished to this date.
I felt knitting takes lot of patience and did not carry on .Now I have a small 2 years old daughter around I do stitching and embroidery but not very often.
.All of a sudden ,I felt like I should do at least one sweater for my daughter and picked up the needles again.
I practiced a bit ,made a small jacket for a little Elmo she has.And I was confident enough to start the sweater.In almost 2 weeks i.e 2 hrs a day approximately this sweater was ready.I am so proud that I finished this ! when I told my mother that I finished this sweater she did not forget to remind me of the sweater which is still lying unfinished for years.I sure will finish it and meanwhile second sweater for my daughter is getting ready.
